Super League Transfer News

"Wigan, the Super League Regular Season winners and favourites for
the Grand Final, have confirmed that four of the squad who have
taken them to the top of the Super League for the first time in a
decade are to leave at the end of the season.

However, the club have remained quiet on the future of Stuart
Fielden, the former Great Britain prop who is also out of contract
at the end of the year.

Fielden, who turns 31 in a fortnight, is wanted by a number of other
Super League clubs including Hull. But Wigan would still like to
keep him, even though they have only offered him a one-year contract
on much lower terms than the four-year deal on which he joined them
from Bradford in 2006.

Phil Bailey and Iafeta Paleaaesina, the overseas forwards who were
not offered new deals by Wigan, have both joined Salford on two-year
contracts. Mark Riddell had already announced that he will be
returning to Australia, and the young wing Shaun Ainscough is to
join Bradford, who have signed the New Zealand Warriors full-back or
centre Patrick Ah Van on a one-year deal.

Other deals to go through on a busy day before the open market
officially begins today included Danny Kirmond's return from
Wakefield to Huddersfield with immediate effect, meaning the second-
row will travel with the Giants to Perpignan for their game against
the Catalans Dragons next Saturday.

Lots to think about on the Super League front for sure.

Another Federer Hotdog...

"Hot on the heels of this US Open 'Hotdog' against Novak Djokovic in
2009...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQBMIyHMtvw&feature=related

Federer does it again - same spot, same court, and the same shot - a
crosscourt Hotdog

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ3lPVjrNoQ

I don't think anything will ever beat that 2009 'dog' - a shot that
brought up triple match point against a player who was playing quite
well at the time - but nevertheless, the 'dog' against Dabul this
week still comfortably makes into the Top 20 Hotdogs of all time -
if not for the reaction of Fed's opponent!

Walcott on the rebound...

"It was frustrating to see the swift, altitude friendly Theo Walcott
left wondering on the golf course whilst England set off for the
World Cup finals earlier this summer.

But it has been even more frustrating to listen to the so called
educated pundits drivel on about how can't cross, opts for the wrong
pass, passes too late or shoots at the wrong time.

I'll be honest, it's driving me mad - so if we're ever in the same
room, seated in the same row, or enjoying the sporting delights of
the same hospitality box... you now know how to wind me up in an
instant.

No player is perfect - and yes Theo has quite a bit to learn - but
why does our media take great delight in criticising our most
promising talents?

Of which Walcott is definitely one.

And whilst all this was going on, TJ was just 18... 19... or 20
years old...

However, there's worse to come, as after Theo's cracking start to
the season (the one where he scored a hat-trick against a dire 10-
man Blackpool) the Hansen's, the Waddles, the Gray's and the
Wright's are starting to back track on their criticism - failing to
even acknowledge that they were just a little bit wrong in the first
place.

The script stays the same though...

"He doesn't have a football brain"

This is where the irritation starts - for me at least.

What I think they mean by this is that, at some level, Walcott is
incapable of understanding the spatial dynamics of top-level
football. This means he makes the wrong decision more often than a
professional footballer should because he cannot instinctively
comprehend the physics of the game.

And it's Walcott's pace and his bullying of inferior opposition
(like Blackpool) that papers over these cranial cracks - sorry
crevasses - in Walcott's game.

But if we break it down, he's simply a young player that makes the
wrong decision at times - and I can think of a parallel
straightaway.

Blue eyed boy (and immensely talented) Cristiano Ronaldo, whose
first months at Old Trafford saw him criticized by all and sundry -
making wrong decision after wrong decision in his early years.

But he has blossomed into one of footballs' brightest, to such an
extent, that he currently outshines his team mates on a match-by-
match basis.

Ronaldo learned - and he was given the chance to learn by Ferguson
and those around him - and I think we should give Wenger the same
chance give Walcott the tuition he needs to become an England great.

Hansen, Gray, Wright and Waddle - they're all irrelevant right now.
The one and only person whose opinion counts for anything at the
moment is Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, and to be honest, I'm
warming to his Walcott master plan.

Wenger wants to mould Walcott into being the best player he can
possibly be, which means putting him through some short-term
frustration. He is making him work on those very aspects of his game
that could so easily be ignored.

The simple thing to do - and what I'm sure many less judicious
managers would do - is to get Walcott to rely on his pace and make
him work just on his crossing. That way you could make him into an
effective, if limited, winger.

After the Blackpool game, Wenger repeated his belief that Walcott
will end up playing through the middle. Towards the end of last
season Walcott revealed that Wenger had got him watching DVDs of
Freddie Ljungberg in his prime. The idea was to emulate the Swedish
international's facility for timing runs through a defensive line
and bring a new dimension to Walcott's game.

It is this kind of work - inviting him to attack the more crowded
areas in the middle of the pitch - that could end up making Walcott
a truly rounded player, not just a touchline sprinter.

This is a crucial season for Walcott - that's obvious - but with his
shoulder problem sorted and a restful pre-season unimpeded by injury
all behind him the stage is set for TJ to show us what he's capable
of.

Walcott through the middle - I look forward to it."

Walcott is in the squad for England's opening Euro 2010 Qualifier
against Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday night. Find the latest odds here >>
